Trust in God
“Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.”
Psalms 60:11-12
If ever there were a time that we needed help as a nation and as a people, it is now. We have become a shame and a reproach among the nations, and are in a truly helpless state.
In such a state, we might well look with eagerness and desperation toward anyone or any thing that might offer hope to us in our pitiful state. We are sinking fast and we know it, and we need someone to lift us up out of the depths of despond.
But may I remind our readers that the help of man is vanity. It is men (we ourselves) that got us into the mess that we are in, and no one can get us out of it save our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
It is only through God that we shall ever do valiantly again.
Great wealth and the wealthy will not save us. “They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.” Psalm 49:6-7
Neither will any prince or president save us. “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.” Psalms 146:3
Do not place your hope in anyone or anything other than our blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ — for all will disappoint, all will frustrate, all will fail save He alone.
“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.” Psalms 118:8-9
“Thus saith the Lord, Cursed be the man that trusteth in man . . . but . . . Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:5-8
Only in God — in His love, His grace and His mercy — is there any hope for our people. Man will only disappoint. So turn now, turn all ye people to God with a penitent and contrite heart, and see if He will not hear our humble cry.
O Lord God, help your people to trust in you. Amen.
