Thou Hast Destroyed Thyself
We are living in one of the darkest times in history for our people. We have gone from being the head to being the tail. We have gone from honour to disgrace. We have gone from being the courageous people who conquered the North American continent to the people who will gladly give up any and every freedom for the sake of supposed peace and safety, which is, in reality, neither peaceful nor safe. We are completely dominated.
An understanding of Deuteronomy chapter 28 is essential in understanding why we are in the situation we are in. In verses 1-14 we read about all the blessings that God promises His people if we will just obey Him and honour Him as a people. Rich and bountiful blessings! Wonderful blessings! But in verses 15-68 we read about all the curses that God promises we will have to endure if we are disobedient and rebel against Him. Dreadful and devastating curses! Horrible curses!
As a people, we used to live in Deuteronomy 28:1-14. We were the head and not the tail. We were above only, and not beneath. We were blessed beyond measure, just like God promised.
But in our blessings, we became prideful and slothful and we turned away from God; so now we are living in Deuteronomy 28:15-68. We are cursed on every side and the strangers among us have risen high above us, just like God promised. “The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.” Deuteronomy 28:43
Such a sad state of affairs! We are so far gone now that there is no way we can ever correct things in our own strength. But our gracious God has provided us a way out : “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
Like lost sheep we have gone astray, and things will never be right again unless we do what is needed and what is prescribed in the above verse of Scripture. It is perhaps the most important Scripture of our day.
But I look around and see that, for the most part…
- WE ARE NOT HUMBLE – we are proud and self-centered.
- WE ARE NOT PRAYING according to His Will — but according to our own desires.
- WE ARE NOT SEEKING to draw near to Him because we love Him — but because we want something from Him.
- WE HAVE WICKED WAYS — and we like them.
When we as God’s people repent and follow His instruction here given, we have His Word that He WILL HEAR from heaven, He WILL FORGIVE our horrible sin, and He WILL HEAL our broken and troubled land.
I don’t know about you, but I want that with all my heart.
May God help us all to search within our selves and see if there be some wicked way in us, and if there is, may we, with humble and contrite hearts, ask His help in purging it from our lives. And let us waste no time in doing so – “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” Isaiah 55:6-7
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
“O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.” Hosea 13:9
