The Search for Truth
In the movie “A Few Good Men” a US Navy lawyer, played by Tom Cruise, says to Colonel Jessup, played by Jack Nicholson, who is on the witness stand, “I want the truth”. Colonel Jessup replies in a loud voice “You can’t handle the truth!” I can’t help but think that this is exactly what we could say about our world today, we “can’t handle the truth”. Truth seems to be something we know nothing about. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines truth as: – the truth: the real facts about something: the things that are true: the quality or state of being true: a statement or idea that is true or accepted as true.
The Bible says in Eph. 4:21 “If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:”, in Ex. 34:6 “And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,”, in Psa. 15:2 “He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.”, in Psa. 25:5 “Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”, in Ephesians 5:9 “(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)”, in John 8:31-32 “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”, in John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
It is clear from these verses that God’s Word is truth. The Lord Jesus Christ is our truth. He covers us with His righteousness and His truth and sets us free. God’s laws are truth. If this world could only see that God through His infinite mercy has given us the way to peace and contentment through Jesus Christ and by following His laws we can have life abundantly. Unfortunately the world today sees God’s laws as something bad and something we must do to please a demanding God. If they only knew that God’s laws are there to protect us and give us a good life, while at the same time honouring Him who knows what’s best for us. The world is in denial and it is actually ironic because the very thing that we reject is the very thing that can save us and help us.
There is nothing that can give us more peace than knowing we have a Saviour who watches over us and helps us in our time of need. We must learn to trust Him and not foolishly go out on our own course where we can get into so much trouble. We must remember that God has given us a wonderful gift in the Lord Jesus Christ and when we accept Him and repent we become righteous through Jesus Christ. This is a true gift. This is truth. Ephesians 6:14 states, “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.”, 2Cor. 6:6-8 “By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;”
It does appear today the world “can’t handle the truth”. We live in a world full of lies and deceit that it is hard to know when someone is telling the truth. Today people don’t even appear to know what the truth is. Even by today’s worldly standards for truth people continually lie and cover up the truth. It really is amazing that we have fallen so low. I called this article The Search For Truth but I am not sure anyone is even searching for truth anymore. People seem to be searching for a way to lie and get away with it.
My friend uses the phrase “the truth will prevail” when she sees things are not exactly what they seem. She knows that lies and deceit can only go so far before they are found out. They bring nothing but suffering and hardship. Satan has been using people to feed us his lies for long enough and his time is just about up. The real TRUTH is about to be revealed to the world when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to rule and reign in His Kingdom on earth. Those who “can’t handle the truth” will have to wait for their time of judgment in the second resurrection. Accept the Lord Jesus Christ and His righteousness now and start living the TRUTH.
John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”
John 14:17 “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
