The Golden Rule
It has become a common saying that the Golden Rule is, “Do to others as you would have them do to you”; in other words, that the “brotherhood of man” is the Golden Rule.
It is not! The Golden Rule is, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God.” In other words, the Fatherhood of God is first, and the Brotherhood of man is second. One is the Golden Rule; the other the Silver Rule.
Leave God 0ut of the count and make man the first consideration and you will find the inspiration to brotherhood soon degenerate into a form, without soul or substance. Only in the recognition of God as the Father of all, can we keep alive the spirit of brotherhood.
“Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy mind, with all thy soul, and with all thy strength”—that is Gold, pure Gold! . . . “And thy neighbour as thyself” — that is Silver! If we understand this, we will sacrifice everything — our life and all we possess — to maintain our loyalty and service to the Father; and for the Father’s sake we will sacrifice to help our brother.
If we forget the Fatherhood of God, which makes us all one family, we will soon neglect our duty towards our neighbour. Only the Love of the Father can keep alive in us the love of the brotherhood.
