The Coming King
American politics has become nothing if not downright embarrassing. It has become one party against another in a war for posh lifetime jobs with unlimited perks. Politicians no longer seem to consider what is good for the people who elected them but concern themselves with what might possibly get them re-elected next go around.
In America we have been taught that democracy is a good thing, and we have spread that ideology abroad to other countries and have told the world that everyone should do as we do politically. But it seems to me that we have become the poster child for what NOT to do!
Democracy means that the people rule — a government of the people, by the people and for the people — but, without wanting to sound unpatriotic, I would like to suggest that democracy is only good if the people are good — and sadly, here in America, as well as in the other many nations of Israel, that is increasingly NOT the case. In the past generation especially, we have become more and more corrupt, and are now morally bankrupt.
Benjamin Franklin, an elder statesman from a much better era, said that “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.” He helped us obtain a constitutional republic, but was doubtful we could keep it. He was right.
But this preacher believes that neither a constitutional republic nor a democracy is ideal, but rather a Theocracy, with our Lord Jesus Christ as absolute Sovereign. That may not appeal to all Americans, but it is nevertheless what this preacher desires.
The good part is — like it or not — it’s coming! Are you hearing me? It’s coming! And judging from the way things are going, the time may well be at hand. It is at least on the horizon in the not too distant future.
Her majesty the Queen has, for some time now, been the longest reigning monarch to occupy the Throne of David. This speaks of the great longsuffering of God towards us, His pitiful but well beloved people. Soon, I believe we will see the Lord Jesus Christ coming in the clouds with power and great glory to take that Throne! For “. . . the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David: and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of His kingdom there shall be no end,” for at that time the kingdoms of this world will have become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ “. . . and he shall reign for ever and ever.” Luke 1:32-33, Revelation 11:15.
I look forward to that day with great anticipation! For He will surely make all things new! The corrupt desires and lifestyles of the people will no longer determine public policy, but the Law of the LORD will be the Law of the land. Neither will there be any need of a Supreme Court, for His perfect Word will reign supreme! And we will never have to put up with another politician again, forevermore!
The elder statesman Franklin also wrote an epitaph in his youth which went, “The Body of B. Franklin, Printer, like the cover of an old Book, its contents torn out, and stript of its lettering and guilding, lies here, food for worms. But the work shall not be wholly lost: for it will, as he believed, appear once more in a new and more perfect edition, corrected and amended by the Author.”
We certainly have made a mess of things — but our blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will be pleased to make all things new! “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new . . .” Revelation 21:3-5
