Seek Ye The Old Paths
“Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” Jeremiah 6:16
You have heard the expression, “the good old days.” The Lord God Jehovah is here telling us to seek the old paths wherein is the good way — in other words, the good old way. There are other Scriptures which exhort us to go back, and to seek the old paths. One is Isaiah 51:1, ““Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.” Another is Proverbs 22:28, ““Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.”
Somewhere along the way, we lost our direction as a people, and we have gone down paths we should never have gone down — in our national life, in our homes and even in our churches — and it is killing us! We now find ourselves in a waste place, a place of desolation. We have lost Jesus!
You will remember that there was a time when Mary and Joseph had lost Jesus. “And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.” Luke 2:42-47
Mary and Joseph had lost Jesus! How dreadful to be on life’s journey without Jesus! But thank God, they knew what to do — they went back! And when they did, they found Jesus just exactly where they left Him!
Dear reader, it is imperative that we now go back as a people, and seek the old paths! We must repair the breach, the “foundations of many generations,” and restore the old ways, and walk in them. And when we do, we too will find our Lord Jesus Christ exactly where we left Him! And we will find rest unto our souls.
Amen! God help us so to do — in our homes, in our churches and in our national life!
