God Is Our Defence
“Defend me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.” (Psa. 59:1)
Psalm 59 is a wonderful psalm for us today as we feel the enemy surrounding us from all sides. Evil appears to be everywhere. The world that we have known for so long is quickly slipping away. I know I sometimes feel that I hardly recognize my country anymore. It is not the country that I grew up in and the one that my forefathers fought for. It is a very unsettling time and we must be patient. We feel so often that God is not acting quickly enough and that we should be doing something to help Him. We must remember though that everything is in God’s time. If we wait on the Lord He will defend and help us. We will be His instruments to use to fulfill His purpose. He will help us in all that we do. If we get angry and impatient and say “We must do something now!” we are only making it harder for God to help us.
It is almost like the runner in a race, who sensing that the finish line is near, extends himself too much only to trip and fall just before the end of the race. As Christian Israel we can see what is happening in this world so clearly. We can see how far our nations have fallen and as David, we see our enemy surrounding us. Jesus Christ told us though, that this would be the situation just before His return. Although these things are hard for us to watch and hard for us to live through, we know that this must happen and that they will get worse. They will get so bad that Jesus must intervene to save us. This is the hope that sustains us. Our attitudes must change from thinking only of what can I do, to asking God to show us what He wants us to do at this time. The battle that is coming is the Lord’s battle. He is coming back as King to rule the world. “Then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” (Zech. 14: 3&4) “And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.” (Zech 14:9)
There is a time coming that the wicked will be judged. “For behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Mal. 4:1) Our wonderful Lord, who we have put our faith and trust in, will help us to defeat our enemies, the wicked shall be destroyed. We will never be able to do it alone. Why do we fear and get angry? Yes, we are living in a corrupted world but we know that this is the way it is to be. We must be humble and patient, ready to speak of repentance and God’s coming kingdom to those who are searching for hope in these distressing times. We must be a separate and Holy people, the light of the world, not an angry and anxious group like those who have no hope. This does not mean we sit back and do nothing, but we must wait on the Lord’s direction. Let Him lead each one of us to His purpose. Our nations are falling quickly. Sin is everywhere. The people are lost. We have a responsibility to warn them of what is to come. We can do this with God’s help and direction. He is our defence. “They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. But the Lord is my defence; and my God is the rock of my refuge. And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.” (Psa. 94: 21-23)
