Brexit or Forget-It?
“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision, Then shall he speak unto them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten Thee. Ask of me and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Be wise now therefore, 0 ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.” Psalm 2
There’s no getting away from it – however much I try – I just have to give in and write an update on the Brexit situation! And please bear in mind that with every day that passes things change, and by the time you read this offering who knows what will have taken place… will we have left, will it all have been cancelled, will there be another referendum, will there be another general election, will there still be a European Union to leave – or will Our Lord have beaten them all to it, and returned while all these carryings-on are taking place…? Personally, I would be happy for my last suggestion, for then He would certainly sort everything out!
So why are we, here in Britain, having all this trouble trying to leave the European Union when it should be a clear-cut situation. Over seventeen million people voted to leave with a one million plus majority, and so that really should be that, in our so-called democratic country.
Only it isn’t. And the reason is that most of our MP’s – who are supposed to abide by the wishes of the British people – do not want to leave. So, they are doing all they can to stop us.
We knew it was never going to be easy – and so it is proving. So, what about Almighty God – we are His people – is He going to bring us out? Well, we shall have to wait and see – so, as they say – watch this space…! I well remember our late friend Pastor Alan Campbell of Northern Ireland saying that it would be God who would deliver us, and not we ourselves.
If we look back to the time of Egypt and the Exodus of the Israelites, that was no easy matter either even with Moses and Aaron giving God’s messages to Pharaoh, and with God’s actions. Did it not take 10 plagues or miracles from the Lord? And even after the final event, that saw the first born of Egypt die, that Pharaoh let the Israelites go, yet, they hadn’t gone too far before the Egyptians pursued them.
But, wait a minute, does our Bible not tell us that while all these things were going on, and Pharaoh was refusing to let the people go, that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart so he wouldn’t give in? It sounds as frustrating as our own crazy Brexit situation!
Mrs. May, our Prime Minister seems to be leading a charmed existence – she narrowly won the last general election, losing her majority, she narrowly won a leadership challenge, and as prime minister, her party also got through a vote of no confidence in the government. Is she just lucky – or is she very clever, and is she going to steer us through the choppy waters, to a safe ‘no deal’ Brexit harbour? Or is she just leading us all a merry dance? Will she stay, will she be ousted? And, is the Lord somehow involved?
Going back to the Israelites and the Exodus, apart from bringing His people forth from Egypt, is there anything else we need to consider here? In all His actions was He not demonstrating to His people, and to the Egyptians, His power and His might – and showing that ultimately, if He says He will deliver His people He WILL deliver them…!
And shortly after this whole event, whilst in the wilderness, did He not separate those who were with Him, from those who were not?
Coming swiftly back to the British Brexit – the whole world’s eyes are watching this situation. Anyone with an ounce of sense will see how we are being betrayed by our MP’s and that this so-called democratic country is being shown not to be at all. What a laughing stock! But should we ask ourselves if perhaps God has hardened their hearts – and those of the EU officials too? If so, to what end?
As for us – the 17.4 million people who voted to leave – what are we thinking? The quiet majority who have been waiting patiently for our decision – that we were asked to make – to be fulfilled?
Surely, we represent those Israelites that were brought forth from Egypt by God’s Almighty Hand. And we, consciously or unconsciously, heard His call, to Come out of Her My People…, when we voted to leave? And to that end, surely, He WILL bring us out.
As to those ‘remainers’ – not those of us who accept the result, and feel our wishes should be abided by, but those who have a great animosity towards us for voting to leave, along with those treacherous MP’s trying to halt our withdrawal from the EU – well, they will not experience the fruits of our coming forth into God’s care, as a separate people, an Island people, a peculiar people of His own – theirs will be the same reward as those in the wilderness years that chose not God’s way, “… Dothan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession in the midst of all Israel….” (Deut. 11:6).
And, whatever the outcome of Brexit, we are God’s Israel – there is NO doubt of that whatsoever. So, let us pray that His Will shall be done. I am writing this at the end of January 2019, and much can, and will happen between now and 29th March 2019, – which is supposed to be our Leaving Day – and beyond. We have to remember that this whole ‘Leaving the EU’ affair is much more than a country leaving a group of trading countries. It is about God’s people coming forth to be separate unto Him once more. Coming out of a Babylonian system which is due to be destroyed. Why? Because it is part of Satan’s one-world system, and his plan is to annihilate God’s people. We need to remember the two readings at Mrs. Thatcher’s funeral that she had pre-arranged before her death, and that she wanted the British people to hear – because she knew what was going on. One was Ephesians 6, which states that we “wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Eph 6:12), and to that end the battle is not ours! We need to put on the whole armour of God indeed, and have faith in Him, and trust in Him. Completely!
The second reading was from John chapter 14; “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto Him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man corneth unto the Father, but by Me.”
So, we should not worry unduly about what is taking place – but keep our eyes – and heart – on our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Ignore all the carrying on, all the shouting, all the rumours – just pray fervently, and keep faith and trust in Him.
He will deliver us – firmly believe this! But it will be His way, His timing, and to His Glory! That is the key! As when the Israelites came forth from Egypt, there was a lesson for both; – the Israelites to know that in God they must trust, and to the Egyptians, that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – the God of Israel, is the ONLY God, and He is God indeed.
So, we shall come forth. One way or other!
