What is Truth?
They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (John 17:16-17)
What is truth today? Do we know? Do we care? We are in a time when truth is relative and subjective. It is what we believe it to be at the time. Truth, though, is absolute, not relative. Jesus Christ says He “is the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). He is truth.
Secular humanism today has created a world of confusion where truth has been lost! Where is this leading us? “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). We are heading for destruction. Without the truth of the word of God, through Jesus Christ, we are lost and have no future.
It is sad today to see most of our young people floundering in a world gone mad. They are running around trying to get physically fit but are not getting spiritually fit. They are becoming hard-hearted and selfish. There is no compassion in them. They are being driven by a culture that tells them that beauty, fitness and success are what they should be striving for. They live in a world of atheism, materialism, evolution and moral relativism. They have not got the truth. To them everything is okay as long as you don’t hurt anyone (whatever that means). Can this world survive for long without the truth of God? If we do not believe in God and don’t have Him as our foundation, where are we heading?
As watchmen we must recognize that this is happening in our world today. The world we lived in only a few short years ago is gone. We are like Paul in Acts 17:16-18, “Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? Other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection”.
Today we have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, but it is only through knowing God, and what He is like, that we can know the truth. The word of God is what determines our circumstances and world events. “See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down and to destroy, and to throw down, to build and to plant” (Jer. 1:10). Our God is a God of truth and His word is truth. This truth is our rock, our foundation. It gives us our stability, consistency and sincerity. We can trust and rely on it. God’s whole nature is truth.
This is a tough world we are living in today. There is a battle for truth. Everyone thinks that they have the answer and that their way is the right way. We must be sure that we base our truth upon the word of God. Jesus Christ is our truth. He cannot be anything but truth. This we can count on and put our trust in.
We must be people who “understand the times” we are living in (I Chron. 12:32). We must hold fast to God’s truth. This will see us through this difficult time we are living in before the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do (Psa. 11:3).
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth (III John 4).
