Thought For the Month – Pseudo-Christianity
If you aren’t familiar with the word ‘pseudo,’ it is a term which describes something that appears to be real, but is actually not real at all. Something that is ‘pseudo’ only has the appearance of being genuine.
So, a pseudo-Christian is someone who may exude a facade of being a Christian—who goes to church, and perhaps even sings in the choir—but who in reality leaves his God and his religion at the door of the church when he leaves, and never gives God or His Law another thought throughout the rest of the week. They may appear to be Christians, but they have no walk with God, and obey not His Law. In fact, many pseudo-Christians actually even hate the Law of God, and call those who love God’s Law evil.
Have you ever known one of these pseudo- Christians? If you haven’t met one yet, you will. Today, more and more Christians are beginning to more accurately fit into the category of pseudo-Christian.
What else can one expect when so many ministers across the country preach their weekly sermons from Psychology Today, Reader’s Digest or the latest best-selling novel. Some preachers are so spiritually shallow that they even use sermonettes they download off the internet instead of digging into the Word for themselves! The spiritual meat that is to be found in God’s Word has been abandoned, and we are fed tasteless pablum and self-serving platitudes that tickle our ears and make us feel good about ourselves, when “Thus saith the LORD” is what we really need to hear.
The Word of God says, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die,” while the pseudo-Christian says “Live and let live,” and never once confronts the sinner with his sin. The Bible condemns adultery, sodomy, miscegenation and witchcraft, while the pseudo-Christian says, “I’m okay, you’re okay,” and “To each his own.” It seems that tolerance has either become equal to or has replaced Christianity in the minds of many. But the Word of God is anything but tolerant when it comes to sin.
The Word of God is also anything but tolerant when it comes to false religions. The pseudo- Christian has no problem fellowshipping with the followers of false religions and the enemies of Christ. But the Bible says: “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Amos 3:3 and “What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Jesus said “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” and “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind.” Therefore the true Christian loves God’s Word with a passion, no matter how much that Word goes against the grain of society.
The Pseudo-Christian says we don’t have to worry about keeping God’s Law. But Jesus said that until heaven and earth pass, not one jot or tittle of the Law shall be done away with. He even went so far as to say that anyone who acts as though the Law of God has been done away with (or that it is “nailed to the cross,” as so many teach today) and who teaches others so, will be least in the Kingdom of God. Matthew 5:17-19
Pseudo-Christianity seeks peace and harmony at all costs, even if it means compromising with evil. But Jesus said “Think not that I am come to send peace on the earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” You’re either going to stand for Christ, and stand for righteousness, or you’re not. You can’t serve two masters. You are going to either hate the one and love the other, or else hold to the one and despise the other. There is no room for compromising with evil in the life of a Christian. Don’t you think it’s time we put pseudo-Christianity out of our lives, and replace it with the real thing?
I encourage you to have nothing to do with pseudo-Christianity (1 Corinthians 5:11), but rather, seek God’s Word and live according to its precepts, for: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.” Psalm 1
