Is War Coming?

This year saw the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War and the seventieth anniversary of the D-Day invasion in the Second World War. As we remember these events we can ask, “Are we heading for another and greater war?” In the D-Day remembrance service, the Queen stated that we must strive for peace so that in the future we do not have to erect monuments to young people who gave their lives in service to their country. Our Anglo-Saxon people would agree with this statement but it is increasingly becoming apparent that peace will elude us. The world is in a crisis situation. There is the Russian expansion in the Ukraine, the rise of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) in the Middle East, and political unrest in many parts of the world including Libya, Sudan, the Gaza strip, and even the gradual loss of freedom in Hong Kong. Some African countries are in extreme turmoil trying to deal with the Ebola virus.

In my own experience I have found that Canadians do not want to talk about these disturbing events. These are considered to be problems in other parts of the world and Canadians do not want to be bothered by them. Despite this attitude, there are warnings which we should take note. In his tour of Northern Canada, the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, revealed in one of his speeches that Russia is involved in a military buildup in the Arctic. He said that Canadians should not be complacent about this. Russia has been rebuilding Arctic military bases that were abandoned when the Soviet Union collapsed. They have also been patrolling Arctic waters with ice breakers and nuclear submarines, and Russian jets have been testing Canadian boundaries. Are the Russians getting ready to help themselves to oil in the disputed areas of the Arctic Ocean? Just how much territory does Canada own? King George VI pointed to Psalm 72 as referring to Canada: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” Psalm 72:8. This would mean that our country stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and from the St. Lawrence River to the North Pole. Also, Canada was originally called the Dominion of Canada in agreement with the Psalm. Some parts of Canada are south of the St. Lawrence River, so these areas can be considered extra grants from the Lord in addition to the area mentioned in the Psalm. If Russia should violate our territory, we have every right to take the matter before our Lord God for his judgment.

Beyond a desire to take our oil, would Russia ever invade us? Are we the land of un-walled villages in Ezekiel 38:11, the land that the prince of Rosh will invade? The name Canada is from an Iroquois word meaning village. Also, Canada is a nation of un-walled villages, towns and hamlets that were established right across the country to supply the farms when the two railroads were built. If we understand prophecy and the unfolding of events leading up to the return of Christ and the Kingdom Age we will be able to keep our faith in time of great trouble when others will be panicking. God grant that we have such faith now and in the future, especially in Canada if we end up being the battleground between Russia and America.

Recently Russian jets buzzed a Canadian frigate HMCS Toronto in what was called a provocative incident. It is a statement by Russia that they are angry at Canada. I listened to a political analyst who said Canada has taken the most aggressive action in terms of economic sanctions and statements of disapproval of Russia’s involvement in the Ukraine. Canada has a huge Ukrainian population in western Canada and many of them are Israelites descended from Vikings that settled in the Ukraine (Oleg the Viking, Prince of Kiev; from Encyclopedia Britannica).

The great majority of humanity just wants to live in peace and to be free of oppression, but those dreams are slipping away from people as they see looming disaster in many forms throughout the world. People do not know it, but they have a desire within them for the reign of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, following his return with his saints. “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.” Romans 8:19. That is our hope and prayer.
