Our Most Immediate Necessity National Repentance
Gerald L.K. Smith, a longtime defiant warrior against the ruling powers of evil, and former Director of The Christian Nationalist Crusade, once said: “No clergyman, statesman, journalist or philosopher, within the orbit of my acquaintance or observation has enough intelligence to produce a saving formula for America or the world.” He was never more right, and, incidentally, his words point to the corollary that the nation that rejects God is doomed – the jig is up.
Fortunately they [Nineveh] had the good sense to repent, and the City was saved. Simple, isn’t it?
It was his way of repeating what God, a few thousand years ago, issued as His formula for pardon and peace to a penitent people. This document, when observed, has never failed to prove its truth and saving power, to which Holy Writ and history so amply witnesses. It runs thus, “If My people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14.
Outside of Sodom and Gomorrah there probably never was a more wicked city on the face of the earth than Nineveh in its day, so odiously evil that it was given just forty days in which to repent or be entirely destroyed. Fortunately they had the good sense to repent, and the City was saved.

Simple, isn’t it? So astounding in its simplicity that we can’t, or won’t, believe it to be possible!
But, what a shameful indictment of Christianity! For we who bear the name of Christian, and endowed with all the advantages it offers, don’t posses the good sense enjoyed by the heathen. As self-sufficient, stubborn and stiff-necked as the Israelites of old, we prefer to ignore this saving grace and instead spend billions on armaments, fruitless peace conferences, regional wars and other weird panaceas, all to no effect. Does history record anything more stupid than our refusal to accept His miraculous salvation?
Unlike the human species that glories in vanity and things spectacular, God performs amazing wonders with the silent magic of the wizard’s wand. At a command to His Minister Moses to extend his rod, miraculous plagues were inflicted upon the Egyptians, culminating in their utter destruction at the Red Sea, synchronizing with the freeing of the Israelites.
We cannot understand or explain the mystery of such things, but they all happened and they CAN happen again when we comply with God’s formula, which is none other than NATIONAL REPENTANCE. “Remember the marvelous works that He hath done … His wonders and the judgments of His mouth.” (For a partial recital of these miracles read the whole of this Psalm 105.) Remember too, the many miracles that former days of national prayer wrought for our generation.
Then why delay and suffer when relief from fear and confusion can be ours at any time we submit to God’s magnanimous conditions?
Some theologians and other worldly-wise leaders know this formula perfectly well, but there is no disposition on their part to put it to work. No such laxity of patriotism or spiritual poverty as now prevails was known before the last half century. For example, during the Second World War, when no less than nine occasions of national repentance [days of prayer] were held in Britain, not one failed to yield some miraculous manifestation of deliverance from a humanly hopeless impasse. The most spectacular was “The Miracle of Dunkirk” when 338,226 allied troops were snatched’ from the jaws of death or capture by the German-Army. That was in 1940.
A SHOCKING POLITICAL AND SPIRITUAL DECLINE
A number of years ago, an astute British observer made this statement, “We are in far greater danger today than at any time since the Second War.” This is quite a statement in view of the little known fact that the dauntless Churchill confessed that at one point his government was within twelve hours of asking for terms of surrender. Still, those were the days when patriotism was something akin to sacred, and statesmen had the backbone to put into their foreign policy.
“HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN!” For now it seems that our national spinal column has all but degenerated into a supple wishbone of frail texture that shrinks before our enemies and cannot match their cunning at the diplomatic and conference-table level. Two British prime ministers since the Second War, in response to several cries from patriotic sources to call a day of national prayer, replied that it was not considered that any crisis existed to warrant such a step? As Job might retort, “No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.”
As the result of following the United Nations’ line of rejecting God, the Israel nations appear to have sown the wind, and now a whirlwind harvest has begun. A decades-ago DeCourcey Intelligence report suggested that in every western country the existing system of shocking political corruption is eroding our civilization and if not stamped out, we shall not survive. That a total purge is essential and unless it occurs, One-World interests will advance by stealth until the last outposts of the Christian tradition are encircled. [This statement has indeed been prophetic]
Acknowledging this fact, as stewards, we must change our course and conform to that of our Supreme Director if we hope to survive. Unless we do, we are doomed as surely as the great Empires of Babylon, Greece and others that now lie smouldering on the rubbish heaps of past civilizations.
The great thunderstorm of raillery and protest that various crusaders have raised against one-worldism, rampant political corruption and “Spiritual wickedness in high places,” etc., ought to waken the ten slumbering virgins, but it hasn’t. Like the malignant cancer that passes the human surgeon’s skill to cure, the disease has eaten fatally into the body politic and keeps breaking out anew in unexpected places. The patient must now be handed over to the magic powers of the Great Physician who can cure ANY disease if His directions are followed. These are clearly set down in His formula.

God never performs His miracles with fanfare or ostentation, as we are so fond of doing. The Bible is full of His miraculous magic. For example, when the three-powered confederacy of Moab, Ammon and Mount Seir invaded the Kingdom of Judah, He stopped them cold in their tracks, and they ended their invasion by exterminating one another, not a man escaped. And what of the Judeans? They suffered not a single casualty, nor did they draw even a dagger in their defence. You may want to read this stranger-than-fiction thriller in the 20th chapter of II Chronicles. We should remember, the same miraculous power will work for us if we but let it.
Similarly, when the Assyrians besieged Jerusalem, the official prayer of King Hezekiah prevailed and the whole 185,000 of them were mysteriously slain in one night. The only weapons Hezekiah used were intensified prayer, plus the Shield of Faith and Sword of the Spirit. And really, these are the only tools needed to pull us out of the mire, wherein we are stuck fast.
We must realize that the whole world is satanically controlled, and the various governing authorities who administer it are, in major proportion, the Devil’s lieutenants doing his wicked work, whether they know it or not. Despite the truth and urgency of our petitions and protests, we cannot, in our own strength, overcome this supernatural power of the Anti-Christ. The sober truth is that the ONLY power able to break this stranglehold and give us victory is ALMIGHTY GOD. WITH Him there is nothing impossible of achievement. “WITHOUT Him we can do nothing” and we are impotent. That is a well-known Biblical axiom.
If Satan is the “Prince of the power of the air and God of this world,” as the Bible assures us, what is wrong with sinking [Protestant] denominational differences and starting a united Christian offensive to overthrow him?
God’s formula contains no TIME indication, except WHEN – when we will comply with the conditions named, and He sternly warns of the folly of procrastination and complacency – “When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you, then shall they call upon Me, but I will not answer; they shall seek Me early, but they shall not find Me, for that they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord; they would none of My counsel; they despised all My reproof.” Proverbs 1:27-29.
Our responsibility is awesome. Yet, the wise will see in this the opportunity of a life-time to break the chain of bondage to Satan. But will our authorities be persuaded to act? There’s the rub.
The renowned historian, Dr. Arnold Toynbee, said,
“Modern civilization has reached the brink where survival or extinction meet. Man’s only hope for survival in the nuclear age lies in the hope offered by Christianity.”
“O consider this ye that forget God, lest I pluck you away and there be none to deliver.”

Through the prophet Hosea, God warned True Israel, “I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their [True Israel’s] offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.” We successfully sought Him out at the time of the Reformation but today it may be even more urgent to go to our knees.
