The Faithful God
As we come to the time of the coronation of King Charles III, it is the desire of the writer that the reader understand that the coronation of the king is a testament of the faithfulness of God to His people Israel and to His servant David, in whom He delighted.
In Psalm chapter 89 God promised David that his seed would endure forever and that his throne would also be established forever. “I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.” Psalms 89:3-4
Just think of that! God made a covenant with David that his seed would be established forever, and that his throne would endure throughout all generations! He continues, and states emphatically … “My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; if they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.” Psalms 89:28-37
God made a covenant with David and promised him in the clearest of terms that his throne and his dynasty would endure forever. It matters not how faithful David’s descendants are. He swore by His Own holiness. People are covenant breakers, but God is a covenant keeper.
As long as we can look up in the sky and see the sun in the daytime and the moon at night, we know that throne still exists, and that a descendant of David is still reigning over God’s people Israel, or else God has broken His covenant with David — and that is not possible, dear reader, because God does not lie. He always keeps His Word.
So, where is that Throne?
There is a large rough stone that is to be brought to Westminster Abbey for the coronation of King Charles II. It is the Coronation Stone, and is also called the Stone of Destiny. This stone has been in the vault with the Crown Jewels at Edinburgh Castle since 1996. Before that time it was in Westminster Abbey resting in the Coronation Chair, which was built specially to house the Stone.
The chair is not the Throne. The Stone is the Throne, and it has been used as the Coronation Stone dating all the way back to the Kings of the Bible. We read in 2 Kings 11:12-14 of the coronation of King Joash or Jehoash … “And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king. And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the Lord. And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets . . .”
Charles III is a direct descendant of Queen Victoria. A genealogical chart was published in the mid nineteenth century which showed the descent of Her Majesty Queen Victoria from King Jehoash, and all the way back to King David!
But it goes deeper. The throne of David was also called the Throne of the LORD! “Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.” 1 Chronicles 29:23
That Throne has to exist in the world today because we know that when Christ returns, He will, as a descendant of David according to the flesh, be given that Throne — because it is indeed HIS! “He [Jesus] shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” Luke 1:32-33
Does God keep His Word? Yes He does! And the coronation of the King is one of the surest testaments to His faithfulness that we can think of!
