Be Still and Know That I Am God
Psalm 46 ranks as one of my most favourite psalms. The words give us so much comfort and assurance in God for His refuge and strength at all times. A comment in my Bible says that “The unshakable confidence with which the psalm leaves the believer prompted Martin Luther to pen one of the great hymns of all time, A Might Fortress Is Our God”. This psalm gave him the inspiration and courage to resist those forces that at the time seemed like it was impossible. Through this he was able to change the church and had a great impact on the world. He is an example to us in this time. In the chaos of the world today there is a need for us to take a break from what is happening out there and rest in our God. He says, be still! How can we let Him comfort and reassure us if we are constantly running around trying to live our lives in this confusing world? We must be still to hear His voice and meditate on His words to give us encouragement and strength to carry on. He is God and He is stronger than any worldly force out there. When we try to speculate as to what is going to happen and how we can handle it we often make decisions based on our own insecurities and of course the unknown. This is when we must “be still”, we must let it all go and relax and rest in the Lord. He knows what we need at this moment in time. He wants us to lean on Him and know that “He is God”. He is our fortress and strength and nothing in the world can compare to Him. We know we cannot put our trust in earthly powers such as the military, governments, nations, even the clergy as they will all fail us. It is only God that gives us the “peace that passes understanding”.
If we consider that the Lord’s return is likely very soon, we must realize that all the things that are happening are leading to this wonderful event. How can we be afraid when we know that? If we are still and let Him speak to us, He will show us the way. He is really the only one we can count on and trust to see us safely into the Kingdom. The Lord is working in our nations and we must be available to Him to help when He needs us. We must be still so we can hear that “still small voice” from God. “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the. And, behold, theby, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the; but thenot in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but thenot in the earthquake:after the earthquake a fire; but thenot in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” (1Kings 19:11-13) Here Elijah is feeling despondent because he realizes that after having some success with the people that they were still lusting after Baal. I believe this is how we often feel today. No one is listening to us and they are lusting after their own gods. Through the above earthly events that surrounded Elijah he realized that God was not in them. They happened but God was quiet. It was when they had passed, and Elijah was quiet that he heard “a still small voice”.
God uses many different earthly events to get our attention, but it is when we rest in Him and hear His voice that we are at peace. Our Israel nations will not experience real peace until we repent and turn back to God. We must hear His voice. I am including the whole of Psalm 46 here as it is so good. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High.is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah., behold the works of the, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.” (Psalm 46)
