Bobble Heads
Writer’s Note: Brooks, I hope this submission is not too controversial, but I am aggrieved at what our church has done respecting the Lord Jesus and I see it as part of the tearing down of our faith and particularly Jesus Christ…. These continuing attacks incense me more and more and I am praying for Elijah or someone like him to call our nation to account. This business of Christians offending others by practicing our religion has become intolerable …. Because we are tolerant to a fault, and do not insist that immigrants adopt our religion, we have this continuing turmoil about us and we seem to becoming more powerless to change it. (Ed – Thanks Don, Malachi gave warning to these church leaders when he wrote in chapter 2:2, “”If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name ….. I will even send a curse upon you …” The Bobblehead is denigration, not glory, and those leaders will reap what they sow.)
Recently, the United Church of Canada, of which I am a member, launched a ten million dollar campaign to put people in the pews. One aspect of this advertising program was the production of a bobble head Jesus. I find it very distressing that the leaders of our church would find that a bobble head was a suitable vehicle to represent our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Apparently, they did not find this demeaning to our Lord, or did they? Our Lord cautioned us against wolves in sheep’s clothing. It would not be the first time that people in authority have betrayed that which they are supposedly supporting. The Bible is full of references of the shepherds not feeding the flocks or leading them astray. We must be especially careful, as the “One World” forces try to homogenize the religions, paving the way for world control. During the last fifty years, we have seen our moral standards decline to the point where we are surrounded by every sinful practice imaginable.
But I have a second complaint about the bobble head. It does not look like the Christ that we have known; images of artists down the centuries have pictured him with red or chestnut coloured hair and fair skin. Those who are attacking our Christ, always offer one with black hair and a swarthy complexion, their idea of what an image of a Jew should be. Even in a movie about David, he was portrayed as swarthy with black hair. (I remember because it annoyed me greatly at the time.) We have a description of David at his anointing. 1st Samuel 16:12, “And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was RUDDY and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to, And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him for this is he.” So it is not such a stretch that Jesus would have some of the personal attributes of his progenitor.
Do we have any evidence of this? There is a description of Jesus in the Archko Volume by Pontius Pilate. It reads as follows, “One day in passing by the place of Siloe, where there was a great concourse of people, I observed in the midst of the group a young man who was leaning against a tree, calmly addressing the multitude. I was told it was Jesus. This I could easily have suspected, so great was the difference between Him and those listening to Him. His golden – coloured hair and beard gave Him a celestial aspect. He appeared to be about thirty years of age. Never have I seen a sweeter or serene countenance. What a contrast between Him and His hearers, with their black beards and tawny complexions!” I read where even Mel Gibson, in “The Passion of Christ” had the star, representing Jesus, wear brown contacts to cover his blue eyes! Blue eyes for Christ, the Jew? Impossible!
The Bible very carefully traces Mary’s lineage from David also and since the lineage was unadulterated, it is reasonable to assume that she had the fair complexion of David and his progeny. There has been much debate about whether Jesus was a Jew or not. Many of those who say no, say it because Jesus was of the House of David, not of Judah. Others say, yes, because Mary is described as a Jew; but how does Mary fit into the equation? Consider Matthew 12: 47,48, “Then one said unto Him, Behold, Thy mother and brethren stand without, desiring to speak to Thee. But He answered and said unto him that told Him, Who is My mother and who are My brethren?” We forget that Christ predated Mary! In Proverbs 8 : 22, “The Lord possessed Me in the beginning of His way, before His works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.” And John offers his insight, John 1:1,2 & 14, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
In the Psalms we find the declaration that, “Thou hast prepared a body for me” or “Thou hast knit me together in My mother’s womb.” Yes, Mary was the instrument used to prepare His body in which He clothed Himself at His baptism. Matthew 3:6&17, “And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the SPIRIT OF GOD, descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him: and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
So, does a bobble head make a suitable image of Christ? Not for me! Christ rules the UNIVERSE! Consider, the following quotes.
Psalm 90 : 7, “For we are consumed by Thine anger, and by Thy wrath are we troubled.”
Matt. 28 18 “And Jesus came and spate unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Psalm 29 : 2, “Give unto the Lord the glory due His name: Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”
